The controlled logical clock--a global time for trace-based software monitoring of parallel applications in workstation clusters

چکیده

Event tracing and monitoring of parallel applications are difficult if each processor has its own unsynchronized clock. A survey is given on several strategies to generate a global time, and their limits are discussed. The controlled logical clock is a new method based on Lamport’s logical clock and provides a method to modify inexact timestamps of tracefiles. The new timestamps guarantee the clock condition, i.e. that the receive event of a message has a later timestamp than the send event. The corrected timestamps can also be used for performance measurements with pairs of events in different processes. The controlled logical clock is motivated and it is analyzed in detail by computer simulations. No additional protocol overhead is needed for the new method while tracing an application. It can be implemented as a filter for tracefiles or it can be integrated into monitor tools for parallel applications.

Performance Monitoring on an HPVM Cluster

Clusters of workstations are becoming popular platforms for parallel computing, but performance on these systems is more complex and harder to predict than on traditional parallel machines. Hence, performance monitoring and analysis is important for understanding application behavior and improving performance. We present a performance monitor for HPVM, a high-performance cluster running Windows...

Interlock Avoidance in Transparent and DynamicParallel Program

A fundamental problem with runtime monitoring of parallel programs is the intrusion introduced by instrumenting the original program. In order to minimize the amount of intrusion in monitoring parallel programs, the logical clock approach (LCA) was proposed. It uses logical clocks to time and control the ordering of communication events during monitoring, and to reeect the real execution behavi...

Pareto-based Multi-criteria Evolutionary Algorithm for Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem with Sequence-dependent Setup Times

This paper addresses an unrelated multi-machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup time, release date and processing set restriction to minimize the sum of weighted earliness/tardiness penalties and the sum of completion times, which is known to be NP-hard. A Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model is proposed to formulate the considered multi-criteria problem. Also, to solve the mo...
